you never miss the

water

i whisper vesper in

summer moonshine.

a starving stray dog

eats a house pet fat

cat and while surely

i can appreciate the

metaphor, it doesn’t

make me feel any

better.

sucker punch the

ballot of the purple

party candidate.

a tiny attic light left

on in a well-worn

koshari kachina

dollhouse on an

adobe dirt floor in

the pueblo of my

heart gathers

moths.

i snort carefully cut

lines of the golden

dust of their wings.

a vision of a snake

oil government,

costume jewelry

authority with a

faux iron fist and a

whip driven

working class

waking up to

the reality of a

bloodless

revolution.

peace,

a luxury so rarely

afforded in history.

the record will hiss

till it’s turned over.

an interstellar

fortune teller from

a traveling galactic

circus reads my

hairy palms,

a vaudevillian

tragicomedy in

three acts.

she finds it

derivative, but

predicts the

people will relate.

after the encore

we throw flowers

at each other’s

feet

and while no

one would dare

to blame us for

pricking our

fingers, they’re

best admired

from the

ground.

maya whistling

dixie on the

silver screen.

poor gods and

apes

in a

perpetual state

of panic

and infrared

adrenaline.

star wipe to

a higher state

of

consciousness,

to a society not

content to live

in the stupor of

the corrupted

first attention

of a cartoon

culture drunk

on a religion

of

consumption

worshiped at

an altar of

plastic in

a paper

temple

built from

coupons and

instant winner

sweepsakes

checks.

jump cut to a

drive without

my seatbelt

to a grocery

store across

the street,

sliding glass

and

aggressive

fluorescents,

sacred

geometry

selling potato

chips and

cigarettes.

the din

begins to

symphony,

the omens

become

obvious

and

the path is

met with a

momentum

measured

in

impeccability.

dissent the

thrall of a

counterfeit

consciousness

or don’t

and do your

best to feign

surprise.

when you lead

with your chin,

expect to spend

time picking up

teeth.
